Entrepreneurial Judgment

April 10, 2008 · 2 Comments

Quote of the day on Entrepreneurial Judgment by Marc (pmarca),

You’d better not have a lot of doubts about what you are doing because everyone else will, and if you do too, you’ll probably give up.

Of course, an entrepreneur’s doubt avoidance is only a plus right up to the point where it becomes pigheaded stubbornness that interferes with her ability to see reality, particularly when a strategy is not working.

In my view, entrepreneurial judgment is the ability to tell the difference between a situation that’s not working but persistence and iteration will ultimately prove it out, versus a situation that’s not working and additional effort is a destructive waste of time and radical change is necessary.

I don’t believe there are any good rules for being able to tell the difference between the two. Which is one of the main reasons starting a company is so hard.

A big thank you to everyone who attended. Your presence made the event possible and has enthused us to plan another one very soon.

Discussions around the next meet will happen on the POCC forums. Stay tuned to find out when we will be meeting next. If you have any feedback and suggestions, do drop us a line or post a comment on POCC website.

Ideas are just a tiny multiplier

March 27, 2008 · 9 Comments

I happened to come across this relevant post on on the value of business ideas.

Quote for the day: The most brilliant idea, with no execution, is worth $20.

“Ideas are worth nothing unless executed. They are just a multiplier. Execution is worth millions.

Explanation:

AWFUL IDEA = -1
WEAK IDEA = 1
SO-SO IDEA = 5
GOOD IDEA = 10
GREAT IDEA = 15
BRILLIANT IDEA = 20

The stuff that builds great careers

March 20, 2008 · 1 Comment

The exploding job market over the last 4 years has made many believe that the “resume-view” of their careers is the view that matters.

The resume-view has clear breaks with one paragraph dedicated to each employer and a defined period attached to each. The more employers on the resume, the longer it will be. The more skills on the resume, the longer the skills section will be. And, the greater the brand value of the employer, the better the resume.

Frankly, I’m not surprised why the resume dominates career thinking. Keep reading →

More quotes on rollercoasters and entrepreneurs

March 15, 2008 · No Comments

I had no idea Shakespeare said this,

“Our doubts are traitors, and make us lose the good we might oft win, by fearing to attempt!”.

What are you doing?

March 14, 2008 · No Comments

Nice quote from Larry Ellison to sum up this torrid week,

“There are two kinds of people in business; people who build products and people who sell products. Figure out how you fit into one of these two camps, or you’re toast.”

- Larry Ellison quoted on Found+Read.

Now I know why my head hurts when I find myself dealing with issues that have very little or no relevance to staying on track. If you are in a startup, such issues are plenty and tempt you every day. The raw environment of a startup requires, nay begs that you simplify your thoughts and focus on quickly setting and meeting goals.

Even if you are in the services industry and have an entrepreneurial mindset, focus on either one of the two things. Take your product seriously. That is the only way you will survive a startup later on.

For every brand and for every person, yesterday is irretrievably gone and tomorrow is worth a great deal.

- Seth Godin, on sunk cost and your personal brand.

Entrepreneurs are good at keeping their dream when everything about them is changing.

The game is over when I say so

March 11, 2008 · No Comments

The rich troves of data at the fingertips of the biggest Internet companies are also creating a new kind of digital divide within the industry. Traditional media companies, which collect far less data about visitors to their sites, are increasingly at a disadvantage when they compete for ad dollars.

The major television networks and magazine and newspaper companies “aren’t even in the same league,” said Linda Abraham, an executive vice president at comScore. “They can’t really play in this sandbox.”

more. New York Times, To Aim Ads, Web is Keeping…

Gosh! The 500 pound Gorilla is at a serious disadvantage when compared to the 200 pound Gorilla cause its muscle to mass ratio is lower and so won’t get in to the same ring. When did the NY Times start encouraging FUD? The last time I checked Publicis was still wayy bigger than Google.

It would be interesting to know what kind of data traditional companies held about their consumers. For example, what groceries you buy and how often.
